Other Southminster Missions

Empty Medicine Bottle Collection – helping globally and environmentally: Empty prescription bottles are collected and used for shipping medical supplies to Africa where they are used to dispense medicine to patients in African hospitals.

Feed the Homeless – South Africa: Southminster donates to help a member’s local church in South Africa feed a Christmas dinner to over 800 homeless people.

Luminaria Sunday – Honoring and Remembering – in conjunction with the American Cancer Society: Southminster’s fourth Luminaria Sunday was held on February 15, 2015. Luminaria bags, with names of those touched by cancer, were lit by glow sticks and placed around the sanctuary during the worship service. The names were offered to God during the Prayers of the People. These bags will be re-used at the Relay for Life.

American Cancer Society Relay for Life:  Volunteers will walk the track at Glenbard South High School on Friday evening June 19, 2015 to raise awareness and money for cancer research. Luminaria bags from Southminster’s Luminaria Sunday and bags from Wheaton and Winfield will be placed around the track.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAGlen Ellyn Warming Shelter: On the third Sunday afternoon of the month during winter, Southminster volunteers staff the Warming Center from 1:15-4:00 p.m. at the Glen Ellyn First United Methodist Church for 30-45 homeless neighbors. Soup is contributed by the host church, and fresh bread and cookies are provided by Southminster. This mission provides a safe, warm place with a nutritious lunch for those who have no home.

March “Mission” Madness”: For the second year, Southminster entered a March “Mission” Madness with the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament using the ESPN website. Members can join with a minimum $10 donation per tournament bracket. The four highest-point individuals will each choose the SPC Mission that will receive their share of the pool of donations.

Prayer Shawl Ministry: This ministry meets once a month to knit prayer shawls that are prayed over and hand delivered to the elderly and those who are ill, hospitalized, or are facing an unusual challenge.

Quilt Ministry:  This ministry creates lap quilts for the residents of the DuPage County Convalescent Center. Volunteers meet monthly from September through May. People with all skill levels are invited to join us.

 Soles4Souls – helping globally and environmentally: Every two years, used shoes are collected and distributed worldwide to those in need of footwear. Southminster is scheduled to collect gently- used shoes in 2015.
