We need to retool our youth program for the fall. So, please look at the text from Blair N about meeting the soonest Sunday everyone will be here. Blair and Wendy are still out of town this Sunday, Aug. 16.
Youth Mission Team Report:
The youth and adults of Southminster’s Youth Mission Team returned from a week of workcamp in Wausau, WI, on July 18th with sore muscles, a touch of sunburn, a bug bite or two, but also with smiling faces and a feeling of having helped some folks in need. At their worksites, they endured temperatures in the 90s with high humidity and smoke from wildfires wafting in on the Wednesday afternoon of the camp week. We wore masks while working on Thursday and were very grateful that the smoke cleared by work time on Friday. Together with the 316 other workcampers at the Wausau camp, we built decks and wheelchair ramps and painted homes. The campers came from 18 different churches in 9 states. Divided into 54 work crews, they served residents in 46 sites, with a 112% completion rate. (Don’t ask me about the math on that one!) All in all, this work camp did 9,960 hours of community service labor for the people of Wausau.
The local committee—the group on the ground in the location who work with Group Mission Trips to vet residents, gather materials, and arrange lodging—was the Wausau chapter of Habitat for Humanity. The Group Mission Trips staff provided a program focused on illumination, how Jesus illuminates our fears, our sin, our hearts, our lives, and our service.
The Youth Mission Trip is the highlight of our youth program. It provides a fun summer adventure, a vital spiritual experience, a great social context, and teaches the meaning and value and joy of service.
We could not do this without you, our church family. Thank you, Southminster, for supporting our youth and the Youth Mission Trip. Where will God send us next year?
